Referral Programme Terms
Draft: pending legal review. This is a working draft. It is not legal advice and is not yet in force. Highlighted text in brackets is a placeholder to fill in ([like this]) or an open business decision ([Decision: like this]). The amounts and thresholds below are the values the platform uses today; they are placeholders until the business decides them.
These terms apply when you share your Bonus Round referral link. They add to our Terms of Service. "You" is the person or company that shares the link (the referrer); the "referred account" is the new Bonus Round account created from it.
The short version
- Share your link from Refer & earn. When someone you referred goes live, you get a bonus.
- A developer goes live when their game is out of test mode on a real domain and has served real impressions. A brand goes live when it has spent real, paid ad credit.
- One bonus per referred account. You can't refer yourself, your own company or your own team.
- Brands get the bonus as ad credit. Developers get it as earnings, paid out with their other earnings.
How it works
- Every account has a personal link,
bonusround.io/r/<code>. When someone opens it, we remember who sent them (see Link tracking). If they create a Bonus Round account, it is attributed to you. - The first referral link someone opens is the one that counts. An account can be attributed only once, and only when it is created. Accounts that already exist can't be referred.
- You can see each referral and its status (signed up, in review, rewarded) on the Refer & earn page.
Who can take part
- Any Bonus Round account in good standing may share its link. [Decision: Eligibility: whether the programme is open in every country, and any age, business-only or sanctions restrictions]
- Our employees and contractors can't earn referral bonuses. [Decision: Confirm employee / contractor exclusion and whether it extends to their families]
- You must follow the law and our acceptable-use rules when you share your link. No spam, no misleading claims about Bonus Round, no bidding on our brand name in search ads, and no posting your link on coupon or deal sites. [Decision: Marketing restrictions on referrers (search ads, coupon sites, paid placements)]
When a referral qualifies
- Developer referral: the referred account's game has checked in with the Bonus Round SDK from a real public domain (not localhost or a test host), test mode is off, and the game has served at least 1,000 real impressions to at least 50 different players. Test-mode traffic and traffic we consider invalid don't count. [Decision: Developer qualifying threshold (impressions and players)]
- Brand referral: the referred account has spent at least US$50 of paid ad credit. Only money the brand actually paid counts. Welcome credit, test credit, promotional credit and referral credit don't count, and we treat them as spent first. Refunded or charged-back payments don't count. [Decision: Brand qualifying spend threshold]
- A referral must qualify within 12 months of the referred account being created, or it expires. [Decision: Qualification window (12 months proposed)]
Bonus amounts and how they're paid
- Developer referral: US$25. Brand referral: US$50. [Decision: Referral bonus amounts]
- One bonus per referred account, even if it later both makes games and runs ads.
- If you run brands, the bonus is added as ad credit: it can be spent only on Bonus Round ads, and can't be withdrawn, refunded or transferred. If you make games, it is added to your earnings and paid out with them under the payout rules (minimum payout and payout method). [Decision: Whether earnings bonuses also wait for the 30-day hold before they can be paid out]
- If you have neither a game nor an ad account when the referral qualifies, we hold the bonus until you add one. [Decision: What happens to a held bonus if the referrer never adds an account]
- The referred account may also get a welcome bonus when we offer one; any such offer is shown at sign-up. [Decision: Whether referred accounts get a bonus (off today), and how much]
- You are responsible for any taxes on bonuses you receive. [Decision: Tax reporting for referral bonuses (e.g. 1099 thresholds)]
Limits and review
- You can earn up to 10 bonuses a calendar month. Referrals that qualify after that wait for review. [Decision: Monthly cap per referrer]
- If your bonuses in any 30-day period would exceed US$250, we check them by hand before paying. [Decision: Manual review threshold]
- We may hold any bonus for review while we check that a referral is genuine.
Self-referrals and fraud
The programme rewards bringing new customers to Bonus Round. A referral doesn't count, and we won't pay it, if in our reasonable view:
- you referred yourself, for example a second account for you, your company or someone on your own Bonus Round team or workspace;
- the referred account uses the same company email domain as yours (public email providers such as Gmail are fine), the same payment card, or signed up from your network around the time you were using it;
- the impressions, players or spend that made it qualify are invalid (for example bots, incentivised traffic, self-dealing between you and the referred account, or payments that are later reversed); or
- the link was shared in breach of these terms.
We may reverse a bonus that was paid on a referral that turns out not to qualify, including by deducting it from your ad credit or earnings, and we may remove you from the programme. [Decision: Clawback period and process for reversing paid bonuses]
Link tracking
When you open a referral link we set a first-party, functional cookie, br_ref, that holds the referral code and the time you arrived. It lasts 30 days, isn't used for advertising, and is deleted once you create an account. We also keep a keyed hash (not the address itself) of the network address of link clicks and sign-ins for 30 days, only to apply the self-referral rules. See our Cookie policy and Privacy Policy.
Expiry, changes and ending the programme
- We may change these terms, the bonus amounts or the qualifying rules, or end the programme, at any time. Changes don't affect bonuses already paid. Referrals that already signed up keep the rules that applied when they signed up [Decision: Grandfathering: which rules apply to referrals in progress when the terms change], and we will give at least [Decision: Notice period before ending the programme (30 days proposed)] notice before ending it.
- Unspent referral ad credit follows the same rules as other promotional credit. [Decision: Expiry of unspent referral ad credit]
